一个年轻漂亮的农村女孩子离开她的家乡,梦想在大城市工作和生活。由于她没受过什么教育,能找到的只能是工资又低活儿又苦的工作。她不喜欢艰苦的劳作和仅能糊口的工资,在一个推销员的勾引下与后者同居。她的年轻美貌吸引了推销员的一个朋友,他是一家生意兴隆的豪华酒吧的经理,从酒吧侍者的职位开始,凭着自己的聪明爬上了高位,现在也是事业有成,功成名就。可惜他的家庭生活没有温暖,和妻子同床异梦,一双子女也是关系冷淡。正是在这种情况下,经理爱上了女孩,不惜抛弃自己的工作和家庭与女孩去了另一个大城市。他们在那里过了一段开心的日子。由于经理找的合伙人不愿再与他合作下去,他失去了工作。此时他年事已高,已经找不到合适的工作。女孩被迫养家,凭借自己的美貌和能力在影视圈里出名,最终离开了经理。
这个故事,看上去是不是觉得很眼熟?这样的场景,在现在相当普遍。而实际上,这是美国优秀现实主义作家西奥多·德莱塞(Theodore Dreiser)写的长篇小说《嘉莉妹妹》(Sister Carrie)中的情节。那部作品出版于1900年。同样的故事在现在的北上广依然会发生。这毫不奇怪。因为小说所写的故事,涉及大城市中阶级的流动,在现在依然具有普遍的意义。
说到阶级,美国作家保罗·福塞尔(Paul Fussell)在他的《格调》(Class: A Guide through the American Status System)中,把美国社会分为九大阶级:看不见的顶层(Top out-of-sight)、上层(Upper)、中上层(Upper middle)、中产阶级(Middle)、上层贫民(High proletarian)、中层贫民(Mid proletarian)、下层贫民(Low proletarian)、赤贫阶层(destitute)和看不见的底层(Bottom out-of-sight)。按这个标准,在《嘉莉妹妹》的开头,出场的推销员杜洛埃属于中产阶级,酒吧经理赫斯渥属于中上层阶级,而嘉莉属于赤贫阶层。
社会的阶级秩序一般而言比较稳定,但并非一成不变。不同的阶级之间还是具有流动性。嘉莉刚从故乡来到芝加哥的时候,住在她的姐姐和姐夫明妮家里。嘉莉被他们赤贫的生活吓坏了。他们住着狭小简陋的公寓,过着节俭局促的生活,没有娱乐,与她心目中的大城市生活完全不一样。她本人在一家制鞋工厂找了个工作,工资很低,工作却十分单调和繁重。她每月微薄的薪水,在上交了给姐姐的膳宿费之后,连漂亮的服饰都买不起。嘉莉在来芝加哥的火车上遇到了杜洛埃,后者已经是一个相当成功的推销员,收入颇高,可以穿戴时髦漂亮的服饰,让刚刚从乡下进城的嘉莉艳羡不已。在嘉莉眼中,杜洛埃就是一个成功人士。在嘉莉由于一次生病而失业,在找不到工作差点回老家的情况下,接受了杜洛埃提出的与他同居的建议。嘉莉不是没有思想斗争过,毕竟那时候是二十世纪之初,西方社会对于女性的贞操观念比现在要严格得多。尽管如此,嘉莉妹妹还是无法抵御物质财富的诱惑,做了杜洛埃的情妇。
就这样,嘉莉妹妹过上了原先自己不敢梦想的日子:她不用去工作,可以买许多漂亮的服饰,把自己打扮得时髦诱人。她在遇到杜洛埃的朋友——酒吧经理赫斯渥之后,本能地感觉赫斯渥要比杜洛埃更加优越。那是由于赫斯渥在阶级上要高于杜洛埃,收入也大大超过后者,且他的品味更加高雅,不像杜洛埃是暴发户的风格。赫斯渥由于本身家庭生活的不幸福,遇到嘉莉后惊为天人,嘉莉唤醒了他对于爱情的感觉,使他重焕青春。一开始他还是只想着玩玩,因为他的财产例如房子等都登记在老婆名下,且他的工作不允许他出任何风流韵事。但是随着老婆和孩子都对他日益冷淡,且老婆发现了他的移情别恋而将他赶出家门后,他也就只能孤注一掷偷了雇主的钱,以和嘉莉结婚为许诺带着嘉莉私奔到纽约。他这样做的结果并不美妙:他失去了家庭、名声、好工作,逐渐沦落,到了小说的结尾,他已经属于社会的最底层,每天靠乞讨和慈善过日子,最终不堪忍受生活而自杀。
与他的悲惨境遇相反,嘉莉却成功地从贫民阶级跨进了赫斯渥原先的中上层阶级。她凭借的是自己的美貌、演戏的天赋、和运气。她是社会中极少数幸运的人。赫斯渥其实一开始也是属于下层阶级,他是凭借自己的聪明和勤奋才爬上了酒吧经理的职位,实现了逆袭。他其实也是一个幸运儿。但是不幸的是,命运偏偏和他开了一个大玩笑,让他在爬上高位沾沾自喜之时,无情地让他摔了下来,从此一蹶不振,甚至沦落到社会的最底层。嘉莉和赫斯渥的遭遇真实地反映出社会无时无刻不在进行的阶级流动:下层的人不是没有机会能够咸鱼翻身、飞黄腾达,而处于中上层的人则由于社会的变迁、自身的愚蠢和懒惰而随时可能会滑落到下层。
驱动社会阶级流动的动力就是人们对于金钱和物质永不满足的贪婪。在书中,嘉莉一开始是想要漂亮的服饰和舒适的生活,而当她满足了这一愿望以后,她就想要更大更美的房间,和更多的钱。且在社会里,一个人的邻居,似乎永远要比自己更加有钱和光鲜,自己就是拼命追赶也无法追上他们的脚步。嘉莉以为自己的不快乐是由于她没有足够的钱,可是等她名利双收,爬上了社会的高位,她发现财富依然无法给自己带来快乐。睿智的哲学家们早就说过:真正能带给人持续幸福的是知识和精神生活。尽管如此,这个社会的绝大多数人依然会为了金钱财富而永不止息地去经营、钻营,甚至不惜犯罪。而在这一过程中,会产生如同嘉莉那样的少数幸运儿和像赫斯渥那样的大量倒霉鬼。
嘉莉和赫斯渥这样的故事,在进入21世纪的后工业社会依然每天在上演。非此,整个人类社会无法演变和进步。当我们看着别人的故事的时候,也要小心不要让自己成为赫斯渥,那是一种非常悲惨的命运,而人容易走的又是下坡路。

Sister Carrie是美国著名小说家西奥多·德莱塞(Theodore Dreiser,1871—1945)的作品。这部写于1900年的小说在国内好像比较小众,远比同时期的很多英美文学作品落寞得多。
本书所蕴含的某些“精神”在很多社会都会受到争议。即便在美国也是如此。毕竟在当时年代,女人的社会地位是非常低的,而且社会对于婚姻关系的看法也比较保守。但小说的女主Carrie竟然在婚前与男人同居,并与已婚男人私通,后来还成为一位著名演员,实在是太挑战人们的三观了。所以小说的初版并不算顺利,而且删去了大量的两性描写。当然,也有的人坚持认为,这本小说突破了常规,体现了女性的解放。
其实放在百年后的现代社会,女主的这些“不道德”行为似乎也算不得什么稀罕事。很多小说之所以能够得以流传,一个重要的原因就在于,它突破了时间和空间的界限,无论放在什么年代,什么地域,读者都能从中看到自己所置身社会的影子,能从中看到自己,以及自己身边的人和事。
Carrie不过是一个来自美国小镇的姑娘,她18岁去芝加哥寻梦,希望能够在大城市找到体面的工作,过上美好生活,穿上漂亮衣服,住上大房子。
那么女主是怎样逐步实现梦想的呢?
她先是去投靠芝加哥的姐姐和姐夫,但到了以后才发现他们家竟然简陋不堪,生活也拮拮据据。她不想过这样的日子,便试图去找份好点的工作。但没有技能,也没有工作经验,找了一圈都没人要她,最后只能去做个类似于织布女工的工作,却发现工作环境太压抑,还要承受潜在的性骚扰,很想放弃。
正在此时,Carrie的人生出现了转折。她在来芝加哥的火车上所遇到的一个男人让她跟自己一起生活。于是女主便离开了姐姐姐夫的住所,过起了非婚富太太的生活。用现代话说就是被包养了。
这个“包养”她的男人是个销售员,挣钱不少,对女主也是全心全意,但就是迟迟不肯跟她结婚。理由也很简单,他想先做单大生意,然后风风光光地娶她。但女主不愿意啊。名不正言不顺的,我跟你干嘛呢?而且销售员又老出差,一个人在家非常无聊,对他的不满就越来越多。这个天真得有点傻乎乎的销售员,竟然把女主介绍给自己的合伙人,一个年龄比自己大,职位比自己高,社会地位比自己优越,眼界见识也比自己开阔的“优质”男Hurstwood,还跟人家说,自己不在的时候,要多去家里陪陪女主。
Hurstwood对女主一见倾心。人到中年,老婆不疼,孩子不亲,工作单调,生活无趣。年轻漂亮充满活力的Carrie就像寂静的夜空中突然绽放的烟花,立刻给他的生活增添了万分美好和想象。他觉得Carrie就是自己一直苦苦追寻的梦中情人,千方百计也要得到Carrie的爱,并将Carrie占为己有。
Carrie呢,一开始对这个人并没有什么幻想。但在不断接触中,发现他风趣幽默、谈吐不俗、品位高雅。相形之下,销售员就太逊色了。在Hurswood一次又一次有理有节、有勇有谋地强烈攻势下,Carrie便半推半就地仿佛真的爱上了Hurswood。
还是中国有句俗语说得好,纸里包不住火。一来二去的,Carrie的邻居和Hurswood的朋友都发现苗头不对,绯闻肆起。私情终于暴露到销售员和Hurswood的老婆那里。
在两个“家庭”歇斯底里的过程中,Carrie才第一次知道Hurswood对她隐瞒了自己的婚姻状况,他竟然是已婚的!Carrie伤透了心,觉得Hurswood欺骗了自己,她决心与Hurswood断绝一切往来。而Hurswood那边呢,他的老婆手段高明,几乎拥有他的全部财产,还要求离婚,让他承担抚养费。Hurswood觉得人生已经如此昏暗,如果再失去Carrie,那真的是永无天日了。因此,心生一计——
有一天,他酒后携卷了一些公司财产,急匆匆跑到Carrie家中,谎称销售员出了意外住院了。Carrie此时已经深感愧对销售员,自然心急他的安危,就相信了Hurswood的话,跟着他去找销售员。但中途不断地转车啊转车,就是见不到销售员。然后她才知道,Hurswood骗了她,目的是要跟她私奔。Carrie这时更是气上加气啊,但总不能跳火车吧,就只能继续相信Hurswood,说到了下一站就让她回家。结果这下一站就辗转到了纽约。
小镇姑娘第一次来到五彩缤纷、眼花缭乱的纽约大世界,突然舍不得离开了。而且Hurswood说自己正在跟妻子离婚,马上就可以娶她。此时,Carrie的思想也发生了转变,态度也不再强硬,而且竟然答应了求婚。Hurswood重新办了一个身份证,用另外一个名字和Carrie结了婚。从此告别了过去的所有生活。(实际上,Hurswood始终都没有与原配离婚。但原配有钱有孩子,也没有找茬,就随他去了。)
Hurswood携款逃走的事情败露(Carrie此时并不知道这件事,直到她发达了才知道,但那时她对Hurswood的态度与其说是气愤,不如说是同情),他只好归还大部分钱,留了一部分作为纽约事业的启动金。一开始,凭着他的多年经商经验,新事业看上去还可以,他们住着大房子,生活似乎很有奔头。但纽约可不是另外一个芝加哥,Hurswood在芝加哥的所有锋芒,到了纽约就只能沦为暗淡的沙砾。随着合伙人的散伙,他的新事业走到了尽头,生活也与日俱下。
此后的Hurswood真的是只有更差没有最差,被小说作者写得极其凄惨。一个在芝加哥几乎可以呼风唤雨的人,一步一步沦落到在纽约街头讨饭,最后选择了自杀。整个过程作者做了大量描写,但神奇的是,自始至终,身为读者的我竟没有对他产生过一丝同情。有时刚刚觉得好像该同情一下他了,结果他又出幺蛾子,让人立马心生厌恶。比如自己不去好好找工作,却想着向Carrie要钱。
在Hurswood失业的漫长日子里,Carrie先是隐忍,再是鼓励,然后就想自己也可以试着找份工作。结果她倒是找到了演员的工作,而Hurswood却更加毫无斗志了,整日懒洋洋地待在家里,并不断看似无心实则故意地要她负担生活开支。一天两天还能忍,毕竟也算是夫妻,长此以往,那肯定不行。于是在某一天,Carrie便离开家,住到了同事兼好朋友那里。后面的故事就是描写Carrie如何天时地利人和地成为著名演员,一步步走向人生巅峰。她与Hurswood的交集自然也是越来越少,最后连他死了都不知情。
小说作者虽然给了Carrie一个辉煌的结局,但也说了,Carrie并不幸福。
Carrie确实是不幸福的。曾经她以为的幸福是物质上的丰盈,可当她达到梦想时,却发现自己依然不幸福。
她一直都很孤独。
小说的开篇,在她刚刚来到芝加哥的时候,作者写道:
小说的结尾,当她成为了明星,在纽约过上富裕生活的时候,作者又写道:
无论是在跟销售员还是Hurswood在一起,她都是孤独的。销售员不了解她的内心世界,也没有时间陪伴她。Hurswood的出现好像可以同时给她金钱和陪伴,但换了一个环境,他不过是连销售员都不如的人。
如果按照一般的故事逻辑,Carrie可能会走向失败。她看似辉煌,但那个辉煌是水中月,镜中花。
1. 她的演技实力并不强,没有任何科班训练,几乎都靠着美貌和幸运。但美貌是会衰老的,幸运之神也不会一直光顾。而且她在演艺圈隐瞒了与Hurswood的婚姻,如果曝光,注定是巨大丑闻,完全可以葬送前程。
2. 她没有理财能力。住着超级豪华的酒店,不断添置个人衣物,却没有去做任何投资。
3. 她不读书,只读一些在受过高等教育的人看来很无脑的书,对于社会的发展并没有清醒认识。
4. 她安于现状,不愿意突破舒适区。比如,她只演一些喜剧角色,有人建议她去演一些更有发展、更有意义,也更能体现她自身价值的歌剧,她却只是心动而没有行动。
诸如此类。
但善良的作家对Carrie是如此“偏爱”,他并没有将结局落入俗套,而只是把Carrie最美好的结果呈现给大家。至于别的,就全靠读者自己揣测了。
至于Hurswood,作者对他的着墨并不比Carrie少。他的身上几乎集中了人性中的全部劣根——
得志时趾高气昂,失志时消极怠惰。
习惯了飘在“空中”悠哉游哉的日子,一旦被拉入现实,遭受打击,便以隐形人的姿态逃避熟人眼光和过去的世界,以幻想天上掉馅饼的心态等待转机。
当自己真的一无所有时,就彻底自暴自弃,寻求死亡作为解脱。
作为一个男人,他对妻子不忠不爱,对孩子不负责任,对事业无所担当。
人到中年想找个跟自己孩子差不多大的漂亮姑娘重拾青春,结果却落得人财两空。
总之,Carrie Sister是多么讽刺,又多么现实的一部作品啊!

3.5. Quite a simple realism English reading, that I wouldn't call a real successs. Though it did take me like ten days to go through almost each page, during which I quite enjoyed myself the first half of the journey as a thirsty yankee searching gold mine and finslly managing it, I inevitably found out plots were repeated and those used-to-be attractive and thrilling scenery were just second-rate technique and I might do it as long as I try some times. Here comes the appreciable digests, and hope it could provide you with a view.
Always add some explicit decription of the situations to reveal the truth or predicting the downward story going. Pretty funny and ironic.(52,87,95,)
# Life itself is symbolized in the interwined destinies of Carrie and Hurstwood. She represents Youth in its inexperience, its prodigal energy and hope and desire; he stands for Age, with its general dissipation of energy and slide into death.(XV)

- Or there were some love between people and we ourseleves never found out until hell is ahead. Such a sad and shabby and sucking life for Hurstwood, being a terribly tremble begger, is a fierce but not sharp stab to heart, and for its wired interwinding and desperation, it was unfair as a mere story.
Dreiser has been called a 'determist' and a 'mechanist', and he was those things but inconsistenly so. He transfeused a strain of fatalism into his novels; he does not interpret life in moralistic free-will terms. Rather, he sees each character's fate as intemately bound up with his or her inherited nature and social origins; his characters are buffected by prevailing socio-economic winds and bobbed about on the roulette wheel of chance.
Spencer based his philosophy on Darwin's theory of evolution and applied to human society the ideas of social Darwinism.
It is that world, not the man, who seduces her.
# When a girl leaves her home at eigheteen, she does one of two things. Either she falls into saving hands and becomes better, or she rapidly assumes the cosmopolitan standard of virtue and becomes worse.
- I took the wanted tread one and left the other for another day and that made all the difference. Never to come back and make another life. So cautiously make your choice. Competitive and bloody-cold as the society game, I am going to meet the storm directly but also preparedly.
** All the time she was concious of certain features out of the side of her eye. Flush, colorful cheeks, a light mustache, a gray fedora hat. She now turned and looked upon him in full, the instincts of self-protection and coqutry mingling confusedly in her brain.
There was a little ache in her fancy of all he described. Her insignificance in the presence of so much magnificance faintly affected her. She realized that hers was not to be a round of pleasure, and yet there was something promising in all the material prosect he set forth.
She did not hear this very well. Her heart was troubled by a kind of terror. The fact that she was alone, away from home, rushing into a great sea of life and endeavor, began to tell. She could not help but feel a little choked for breath-- a little sick as her heart beat so fast. 3.It seemed as if it was all closed to her, that the struggle was too fierce for her to hope to do anything at all.
4.He left her revived by the possibilities, sure that she had found something at last. Instantly the blood crept warmly over her body. Her nervous tension relaxed. She walked out into the busy street and discovered a new atmosphere. Behold, the throng was moving with a lightsome step. She noticed that men and women were smiling. Scraps of conversation and notes of laughter floated to her. The air was light. People were already pouring out of the buildings, their labor ended for the day. She noticed that they were pleased, and thoughts of her sister's home and meal that would be waiting her quickened her steps. She hurried on, tired perhaps, but no longer weary of foot. What would not Minnie say! Ah, the long winter in Chicago-- the lights, the crowd, the amusement! This was a great, pleasing metropolis after all. Her new firm was a goodly institution. Its windows were of huge plate glass. She could probably do well there. Thoughts of Drouet returned-- of the things he had told her. She now felt that life was better, that it was livelier, sprightlier. She boarded a car in the best of spirits, feeling her blood still flowing pleasantly. She would live in Chicago, her mind kept saying to itself. She would have a better time than she had ever had before-- she would be happy.

**Carrie, on the other hand, had the blood of youth and some imagination. Her day of love and the mysteries of courtship were still ahead. She could think of things she would like to do, of clothes she would like to do, and of places she would like to visit. There were the things upon which her mind ran, and it was like meeting with opposition at every turn to find no one here to call forth or respond to her feelings.
1.It was blowing up cold, and out of her window Carrie could see the western sky, still pink with the fading light, but steely at the top where it met the darkness. A long, thin far-off sea. Somehow the swaying of some dead branches of trees across the way brought back the picture with which she was familiar when she looked from their front window in December days at home.
2.Once the bright days pf summer pass by, a city takes that somber garb of gray, wrapped in which it goes about its labors during the long winter.... The sparrow upon the wire, the cat in the dooeway, the dray horse tugging his weary load, feel the long, keen breaths of winter.(呼兰河传有相似) I他strikes to the hearts of all life, animate and inanimate. If it were not for the artificial fires of merriment, the rush of profit-seeking trade, and pleasure-selling amusements; if the various merchants failed to make the customary display within and without their establishments; if our streets were not strung with signs of gorgeous hues and thronged with hurrying purchasers, we would quickly discover how firmly the chill hand of winter lays upon the heart; how dispiriting are the days during which the sun withholds a portion of our allowance of light and warmth.
